Common Yellowthroats in the Backwoods / Keith Dennis Brewer / July 10, 2025

On July 10th, 2025, Wildlife Photographer Keith Dennis Brewer captured a striking series of eight photos in the Backwoods of Zealand, New Brunswick, featuring a vibrant pair of Common Yellowthroats — one of North America's most recognizable and charming warblers.

In these beautifully composed shots, we see both the male and female Yellowthroat moving through the dense green foliage. The male, easily identified by his bright yellow chest and distinctive black mask, brings bold contrast to the greenery. The female, with her softer tones of olive and pale yellow, has a more delicate presence, blending subtly into the scene but standing out through Keith’s careful eye for detail.

These birds are often heard more than seen, with their familiar “wichity-wichity-wichity” call echoing from wetlands and thick brush. But in this series, Keith manages to do what many birders only hope for — to clearly and closely photograph both male and female Yellowthroats in their natural environment, interacting and alert.

The series tells a visual story of these active, curious warblers as they perch, explore, and navigate the thicket. It’s a perfect example of Keith Dennis Brewer’s ability to quietly document nature without disturbing its rhythm — preserving the beauty of a moment that many would otherwise miss.
