On July 3, 2025, photographer Keith Dennis Brewer captured a captivating series of black-and-white images deep in the backwoods of Zealand, New Brunswick. These photos feature the elusive and beautifully patterned Ruffed Grouse (Bonasa umbellus), a bird well known for its ability to blend seamlessly into the forest.
What makes this moment even more special is how the bird was simply standing on a branch, calmly watching Keith, almost as if it was just as curious about him as he was about it. In a rare and peaceful pause between human and wildlife, the grouse seemed unbothered by the camera — giving Keith the chance to frame it perfectly among the slender branches and leaves. The black-and-white treatment highlights the grouse’s striking plumage and brings a quiet, timeless quality to the photos.
The Ruffed Grouse is a year-round resident of New Brunswick’s forests, known for the ruff of dark feathers it can flare around its neck and its unique “drumming” display — where the male beats his wings rapidly to create a deep, thumping sound that echoes through the woods. Despite being incredibly well-camouflaged, this particular bird stood out — not because of its colors, but because of its calm presence and watchful eyes.
