A Mini Adventure Today - What did I See? / Head Pond, Route 616 - NB / June 15 2026 / Keith Dennis Brewer
Male Red-Winged Blackbird
Today’s wildlife discovery happened quite by chance.
This morning, while driving to work, I spotted a Snapping Turtle walking along the side of the road near the Head Pond on Route 616 in New Brunswick. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to stop, so I continued on my way.
After work, I decided to stop at the Head Pond to enjoy the view. While I was there, a blackbird began swooping over my head and calling loudly. It would land on one side of me, then fly to the other side and land again, clearly trying to get my attention. Its behavior suggested there might be a nest, eggs, or young birds nearby.
At the time, I didn't have my camera with me, so I watched the bird for a while and took a few photos and videos with my phone. Afterward, I got back in my car and started driving home. As I crossed the Head Pond, I spotted the Snapping Turtle again.
This time, I went home, grabbed my camera, and returned to the pond. I carefully approached the area, making sure not to disturb the turtle. While photographing it, I also discovered a young bird nearby. Sure enough, the same blackbird was still calling and flying around, protecting its young.
With my camera in hand, I was able to capture several photographs of both the turtle and the birds, which I'm happy to share with you all now. Throughout the experience, I made every effort to observe and photograph the wildlife responsibly while causing as little disturbance as possible.
Sometimes the best wildlife encounters happen when you least expect them.
