While exploring the woods around Zealand, New Brunswick, photographer Keith Dennis Brewer came across this fascinating little creature tucked into the rough bark of a tree. At first glance, the bright white, fuzzy body immediately catches your attention, but looking closer reveals an incredible amount of detail. The caterpillar appears to be a Hickory Tussock Moth caterpillar (Lophocampa caryae), a distinctive species found throughout parts of eastern North America.
The Hickory Tussock Moth caterpillar is easily recognized by its dense covering of white hairs, black head, and longer black hair-like projections extending from its body. It feeds on the leaves of several different hardwood trees, including maple, oak, ash, elm, hickory and walnut. Like many caterpillars, its primary job during this stage of its life is to eat, grow and eventually prepare for its transformation into an adult moth.
Although its soft, almost cotton-like appearance might make it tempting to touch, this is one creature that is better appreciated through a camera lens. The hairs of the Hickory Tussock caterpillar can cause skin irritation or an itchy rash in some people, making it a good example of how nature can combine beauty with an effective defense mechanism.
What makes this photograph particularly interesting is the setting. Rather than finding the caterpillar sitting openly on a leaf, Keith captured it moving through the deep crevice of the tree bark. The dark opening behind the caterpillar creates a natural backdrop, allowing its brilliant white hairs and glossy black head to stand out against the earthy browns and textures of the tree. The close-up perspective also reveals details that would be easy to overlook while simply walking through the forest.
For a wildlife photographer, moments like this are a reminder that you don't always have to travel far or search for large animals to find something worth photographing. Sometimes the smallest creatures can provide some of the most interesting subjects. A walk through the woods can turn into a discovery of an entirely different world when you slow down, look closely and pay attention to what is happening around you.
